Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India, with a population of over 250 million. In India, there is a Union Territory where almost 97% of the population follows Islam. In other words, 97 out of every 100 people are Muslims. Well, this Union Territory is Lakshadweep. While the total population is relatively small, the 2011 census recorded it at just 64,473. Of this, 62,268 people were Muslims, making up 96.58% of the population.
Next is the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the 2011 census, it was a full-fledged state with a population of approximately 125 lakh. Among them, 85.67 lakh were Muslims, comprising 68.31% of the total population. In 2019, the Government of India restructured Jammu and Kashmir, splitting it into two Union Territories and designating Ladakh as a separate entity.
Based on the percentage share of Muslims in the total population, Assam holds the third position with 34.22%, followed by West Bengal at 27.01%, Kerala at 26.56%, Uttar Pradesh at 19.26%, Bihar at 16.87%, Jharkhand at 14.53%, Uttarakhand at 13.95%, Karnataka at 12.92%, Delhi at 12.86%, and Maharashtra at 11.54%. In the remaining states, the Muslim population is less than 10 per cent.
States with the lowest Muslim population include Mizoram, where Muslims account for just 1.35% of the population, followed by Sikkim at 1.62%. Among the larger states, Punjab has the smallest Muslim population, comprising only 1.93% of its total.
States with a Muslim population of less than 10% include Gujarat (9.67%), Andhra Pradesh (9.56%), Rajasthan (9.07%), Tripura (8.60%), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (8.52%), Manipur (8.40%), Goa (8.33%), Daman and Diu (7.92%), Haryana (7.03%), Madhya Pradesh (6.57%), Puducherry (6.05%), and Tamil Nadu (5.86%).
Chandigarh leads the list of states with a Muslim population below 5%, with 4.87%, followed by Meghalaya (4.40%), Dadra and Nagar Haveli (3.67%), Nagaland (2.47%), Himachal Pradesh (2.18%), Odisha (2.17%), Chhattisgarh (2.02%), and Arunachal Pradesh (1.95%).
