There was joy among the people of the Barhat area of Jamui district after the examination result of the Bihar Public Service Commission was declared. People were happy that Lalan Kumar Bharti, who belonged to an underprivileged background had cracked the exam and become Senior Deputy Collector (SDC). But although he made his locality proud, it is a sad irony that his own family has been pushed into grief and sorrow despite this achievement.

Lalan’s father, who used to sell shoes and slippers for a living, passed away hours after the Bihar Public Service Commission results were declared.

According to reports, Lalan’s father Jagadish Das used to work as a shoemaker while living in Kolkata. He returned to his village from Kolkata due to the lockdown during the pandemic. After returning to the village, in the last Panchayat elections, Jagdish Das was elected as a ward member from Lakhay Panchayat.

His son, Lalan Kumar Bharti of Tapovan Bhandra village, has secured 349th rank in the 67th BPSC examination. He has been selected for the post of Senior Deputy Collector. Lalan had been preparing for BPSC for the last 4 years and achieved success on his third attempt.

Currently, he holds the position of Auditor. He completed his elementary schooling in his village before attending Sainik School in Nalanda for his final year of study. Following this, he began getting ready for the BPSC after earning his degree in Economics.

On his success, Lalan Kumar Bharti said that he wanted to give all the credit to his late father and stated that it was through a lot of financial hurdles that his father educated his sons. His brother is an engineer. He added that even on his deathbed, Lalan was concerned about and thinking of his son’s future.

Lalan expressed grief at the fact that his father could not celebrate the success of his achievement. Jagadish was admitted to a hospital in Jamui when the results were declared and he was able to listen to the news of his son cracking the exam. He passed away a few hours after receiving the news.
