Ram Gopal Varma’s iconic crime drama Satya is set to hit theatres again on January 17. To celebrate its re-release, a special screening was held in Mumbai on Tuesday, bringing together the film’s cast and crew, including Manoj Bajpayee, Urmila Matondkar, Anurag Kashyap and Makrand Deshpande.

The event saw a heartwarming reunion between Varma and Kashyap, who penned the screenplay for Satya. The duo’s hug caught fans’ attention, sparking hope for a future collaboration. “Guru aur Shishya ek saath,” a fan commented online, while another wrote, “Please collaborate again… Hindi cinema needs it.”

Urmila Matondkar, who played Vidya, Satya’s love interest, turned heads in a stunning black dress and posed with Manoj Bajpayee. Bajpayee, whose portrayal of gangster Bhiku Mhatre remains iconic, reflected on the role that propelled him to stardom.

Sriram Raghavan, another notable filmmaker, attended the screening. Raghavan, known for films like Ek Hasina Thi and Andhadhun, shares a long association with RGV, who produced his directorial debut.

In the lead-up to the re-release, Varma shared a reflective post on X, explaining Satya’s timeless appeal. He contrasted the film’s modest production with the industry’s current obsession with massive budgets and visual effects. “When the whole industry right now is in a mad rush… it might be prudent for all of us to take a hard re-look at Satya and give a deep thought to why it became such a big blockbuster minus any of those aforementioned requisites,” Varma wrote.

He credited the film’s realistic characters to inspiration from real-life people, saying, “The characters in Satya felt so real not because of putting in a tremendous effort in character design but simply because I mostly copied them from real life characters.”

Satya, written by Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap, revolves around JD Chakravarthy’s titular character who becomes entangled in Mumbai’s criminal underworld. The film’s raw depiction of crime and memorable characters cemented its place in cinematic history.
